Official Time

She did it! Valentine’s Day morning my wife and I and some friends entered a real 5k run. As I mentioned before, she has finished one in practice, but was still worried about the real thing. As usual, something happens on race day, and she finished in 34:55, almost a full 3 minutes fater than her practice time. It was very cold out, running down Roy Horn Blvd. way too early in the morning, but what a great way to start the day. My 12 year old son also finished in under half an hour. I beat him by a few minutes, but we were all beat by our friends. They are actual “runners”. (see previous posts). I don’t consider myself all that competitive, but I sure prefer winning. It’s nice to have good friends that provide something to shoot for.

Jogging vs. Running

I like to tell myself, and anyone who will listen, that I am a runner. In reality, I’m a jogger, but becoming a runner is a goal of mine. It’s an amazing pastime, and I’m always impressed with how much variety I can find in it. Sometimes, the thoughts I can process when running alone are staggering. A few are even productive. I have some wonderful solitary runs, but I also have great runs with others. I’m not good enough to really talk while running, but runs with friends, business colleagues, my wife and family are some of the best.

The 5K circuit is a story in itself. From early October to May, events are every couple of weeks. Some are better promoted than others, but the poorly promoted events have the same hard core group of 250 or so that are always there. We all recognize each other and are usually wearing the T-shirt from the last event, but few names are known. The “runners” finish in under 25 minutes, we “joggers” finish a few minutes later. And there are a few regulars in their 70’s and 80’s that win their age categories up in the 40+ minute range. Bless them. I hope to be there someday.

I ran with my wife on Saturday. She hasn’t entered in a 5K yet, but she ran one unofficially with me. She finished her first one in a respectable 37:45, according to the hyper-accurate Garmin 405. (I’ll tell you more about that in later posts). I’m very proud of her. We will be entering a real one soon.
